How to Change a Light Bulb

Changing light bulbs on swing arm lamps and adjustable lamps follow much the same procedure as changing bulbs on other appliances. If you follow these steps, you can easily change a swing arm light bulb safely and easily.
First: Safety first
The most important aspect to consider with any electrical appliance is safety. Shock, fire and broken glass are the top three safety considerations when dealing with light bulbs. Start by unplugging the lamp unit from the wall, which ensures that there is no risk of electrical shock or sparks. Next, give the bulb sufficient cooling time, as hot bulbs not only produce nasty burns, but also break more easily when hot. Use a dry washcloth or winter glove to remove any bulb, whether it is hot or not.
Second: Match components
Lamps have specific wattage ranges for the lights used with them and deviating from these recommendations can pose a serious risk. Carefully match all of the numbers and ratings on the replacement bulbs with those displayed on the lamp, not necessarily those on the old bulb. These parameters are typically on the side of the receptacle for the bulb or on the bottom of the lamp base near the cord. Using the same washcloth or glove, install the new bulb gently, paying close attention to the tension applied. Remember to screw the bulb in only until it is snug. Avoid over-tightening the bulb.
Third: Turn on the power
Once these steps are taken, you are ready to plug the lamp in and test it out. If the new bulb immediately burns out, it typically indicates a larger electrical problem affecting the circuit or even the lamp itself.
